The Lord Lyons Mace

The manufacture of the Lyon’s Mace was done from my designs by Alistair Campbell, Silversmith in Edinburgh.

The manufacture of the Lyon’s Mace was done from my designs by Alistair Campbell, Silversmith in Edinburgh.

It was commissioned in 1999 by the family of Thomas Campbell Gray who was the Macer. There is a commemorative scroll inside the central column that gives details.

The whole piece comes apart with the clever use of screws and a sturdy central rod going up the centre. This was really intended to aid Alastair in the finishing and polishing of the various elements.

The Mace is used on such occasions as the Dissolution of Parliament and the 250th Anniversary of the laying of the Foundation Stone at Edinburgh University.
